Lot 2146

German States - Hesse-Cassel. Taler, 1633-TS. Dav-6749; Schütz-820; KM-115.7; Hoffm.967v. Mintmaster TS (Terenz Schmidt, 1621-1634). Wilhelm V, 1627-1637. Date dividing crowned arms. Reverse Tree in storm, sun above with Hebrew "JEHOVAH". Unlisted variety, LEVA.BOR. Of the 17 talers Hoffmeister lists for this year only three feature "NID" rather than the customary "N" in the legend. Scarce. NGC graded VF-35.

The Hebrew name for God was not to be pronounced. In fact, according to Leviticus, anyone pronouncing the word could be put to death. This resulted in no one actually knowing the vowel sequences of the original four letters (YHVH). Thus, "Jehovah" is just an historical educated guess as to God's name.
Estimated Value $800 - 900.
David Cassel Collection.
