Lot 2117

German States - Hesse-Cassel. Taler, 1627-TS. Dav-6735var; Schütz-733; KM-98.1; Hoffm.6072v. Mintmaster TS (Terenz Schmidt, 1621-1634). Wilhelm V, 1627-1637. Three helmets above shield of arms. Reverse Tree in storm, sun above with Hebrew "JEHOVAH", date in legend. For this year of 1627, of the 35 talers listed in Hoffmeister, only four are of the Weidenbaum style, 31 are not of this style. This lot is a variety of Hoffm.6072, consequently, an unlisted variety. This date and style of coin is not pictured in the Davenport book, "German Secular Talers, 1600-1700). Well struck and attractively toned. Second rarest date. NGC graded AU-50.

The famed storm Talers of Hesse began in 1627 at the beginning of the reign of Wilhelm V, and would be produced until 1639 during the reign of Wilhelm VI. The tree being blown in a storm signifies the tribulations of Hesse during the ongoing Thirty Years War. Just as the tree would bend, but not break, so would Hesse bend, and survive the devastation of the time. The word "Jehovah" above shows God protecting Hesse during these troubled times.
Estimated Value $1,750 - 2,000.
David Cassel Collection.
