Lot 1298

Constantius II, 337-361 AD. Gold Solidus (4.47g) minted at Antioch, 347-350 AD. Diademed, cuirassed and draped bust right of Constantius II. Reverse Roma and Constantinopolis supporting round shield. RIC 81; C. 108. Very lightly double-struck on obverse;. Nearly Mint State.

During the first half of AD 4th century, many changes were made in denominations and their respective relationships with each other. The most important of these new coins was initiated by Constantine the Great in AD 310. The aureus, 60 to the Roman pound of gold, was replaced by the slightly lighter and significantly thinner gold solidus, struck 72 to the Roman pound. The gold solidus, as the principal gold coin of the Roman and Byzantine empires, was minted for nearly seven hundred years.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.
