Lot 1292

Trajan, 98-117 AD. AE Sestertius minted at Rome, 99-100 AD. Laureate head right of Trajan. Reverse Pax seated left, holding branch and scepter. RIC 413; C. 624. Well-struck on a huge, full flan; Superb Extremely Fine with a gorgeous, even brown-red patination. Virtually as struck! .

While the portraiture of the adoptive emperors is often hum-drum in comparison to many earlier emperors, this particular coin is miles above Trajan's norm, both in artistic excellence and its superlative condition. The obverse modeling and reverse detailing contribute to a very special effort on the part of a master celator - this is truly a "wonder coin" !
Estimated Value $6,000 - 9,000.
Ex Triton VIII, lot 1126.
