Attica, Athens. c. 430 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.19g). Helmeted head right of Athena. Reverse Owl standing right, head facing; olive sprig and crescent behind. SNG Cop. 31; Dewing 1594. About Extremely Fine /Very Fine.

One, if not the most popular of all ancient coins are the "owls" of Athens. Important trade coins, today they are unearthed all over the Greek world. In fact, more Athenian tetradrachms have been found in Egypt than in Athens herself!
