Lot 1252

Thessaly, Larissa. c. 340-320 BC. AR Drachm (6.04g). Facing head of nymph Larissa turned slightly toward the left; hair bound with ampyx. Reverse Horse grazing right. Delicately toned;. Extremely Fine.

Facing heads are the most difficult of types for celators to engrave. Think of it - not only must they be cut backwards and opposing in relief, but here the modeling needs to be deeper, rounded and hence sculptural in effect. After the time of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great (died AD 337), Larissa became thecapital of the province of Thessaly.
Estimated Value $1,400 - 1,800.
