Lot 1233

Macedonian Kingdom. Alexander I, 495-454 BC. AR Oktadrachm (29.19 g), struck c. 480/479-470 BC. Rare. Horseman wearing chlamys and petasos, holding two spears, riding slow horse right. Reverse Quadripartite incuse square, AΛE - ΞA - NΔ - PO, within larger incuse square. Raymond Group I. AMNG III 29 var.; SNG ANS 9. Bold strike and lightly toned. We believe the coin has been expertly repaired at 6 o'clock (to hide a test cut as usually seen). Nevertheless, well above average for this rarity and well worth our conservative estimate. Very Fine.

The first inscribed issue of Alexander.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,000.

Realized $4,025
