Lot 915

South Africa - Republic. Veld Pond, 1902 (Pilgrims Rest). Fr-4. 7.86 grams. Boer War Issue. Initials: Z A R, in script; date below. Reverse: In two lines, EEN POND. A few old short scratches on obverse, plus several edge dings. Very well struck for this crude issue. Some residual luster remaining. Very Rare. NGC graded AU-55.

The Veld Pond was struck by the Boers on the run from the British troops during the Boer War. A makeshift mint was set up on the long grass (Veld in Afrikaans), in northeastern Traansvaal. It is generally believed that 986 pieces were struck, but the assayer, M. Cooney, says only 530 were produced. In any case, a great rarity.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.
Ex John H. Clapp collection; from Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. in 1942.

Realized $20,700
