Eritrea. Umberto I, 1878-1900. Type set: 50 Centesimi, Lire and 2 Lire, 1890 and 5 Lire, 1891. KM-1-4. Umberto I, 1878-1900. Old Head. Crowned and draped bust right. Reverse: Radiate star, value, trilingual inscription, short wreath at bottom. Lovely matching set, splendid strike and choice surfaces. With very handsome medium to dark toning, with some iridescent areas of steel blue color. Lot of 4 coins. NGC graded 5 Lire, MS-65 Prooflike, 2 Lire NGC MS-65; 1 Lire NGC MS-64; 50 Centesimi NGC MS-63.

Eritea was an Italian colony established in 1890. Italy wanted to enter the colonial game, but all the lucrative areas were already taken, so all that was available were a few poorer African nations. After its loss in World War II, the colony was taken over by Great Britain.
