Lot 888

Egypt. 20 Qirsh, AH 1293 (Year 29-H). KM-296; Dav-18. Abdul Hamid II, 1876-1909. Brilliant and choice. NGC graded Specimen 65.

The completion of the Suez Canal in 1869 brought Egypt once again into world consciousness. Egypt was now transformed from a sleepy desert nation into a world transportation hub. The land started to adapt some western ways and soon fell into significant debt to the European powers. In 1882, the United Kingdom seized control of the Egyptian government. The reason given was to protect its investments, yet in retrospect it was just traditional colonial mercantilism. The local rulers such as Abdul Hamid II were allowed to continue ruling, but Britain made all important decisions.
Estimated Value $1,250 - 1,500.

Realized $2,415
