Scotland. Gold Unite, ND (1637-1642). S-5531; Fr-56. 9.91 grams. Charles I, 1625-49. Third Coinage (Briot's) of 1637-42. Crowned half-figure right, in intricately embellished armor, holding sword and globus cruciger. Reverse: Crowned, quartered square-top shield, crowned C - R flanking. Briot's signature "B" and a Scots thistle as mintmarks. Superbly struck, fully detailed example. Lovely, old reddish toning. Very scarce in this super condition. A gorgeous design perhaps looking forward to the Civil War which would strafe the land a few years hence from the manufacture of this coin. NGC graded AU-55.
