Norway. Specie Daler, 1844 (Konigsberg). Dav-242; KM-313. Carl XIV Johan (Sweden), 1818-1844. Draped bust of Carl right. Reverse: Crowned shield, rampant lion within, all surrounded by oak wreath. Silvery white satiny luster, with extraordinarily unblemished surfaces, the devices outlined with deep old toning. Flawless. One-year type, elusive in high grade. Probably the finest example known, and a famous coin among Norwegian numismatists. NGC graded MS-66.
Norway, in terms of a national identity, had one of the more peculiar histories of Scandinavia. A united Norwegian kingdom was established in the 9th century. In the 13th century it was briefly united with Sweden, but with the Union of Kalmar, in 1397, the possession of Norway transferred to Denmark, where it remained until 1814, when the country once more passed into Swedish control. This was maintained until 1905, when the Norwegian parliament arranged an amicable separation from Sweden, yet invited a Danish prince, Haakon VII, to occupy the throne of the now independent country.
The Specie Daler for Norway is curiously aligned more to the contemporary German Reichstaler than to Sweden's own Riksdaler, which is of a baser silver.
