Lot 568

German States -- Bavaria. Taler, 1768-A (Amberg). Dav-1956; KM-249. Maximilian III Joseph. Standing lion with sword, in right paw, crowned arms with Order Chain at left. Reverse: Legend within wreath. Prooflike with lovely multi-colored toning of yellow, green and red. Rare. NGC graded MS-63.

Apparently seeing the successful invasion and employment of Austrian Thalers in Africa and the Near East, Maximilian authorized the striking of trade dollars for use in the Levant. The experiment proved to be of only marginal success. It would seem that dreams of an overseas empire, along with the attendant money systems, would not fully materialize until the next century, when Germany was at last a unified country.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.
Ex Irving Goodman Collection.

Realized $3,450
