Lot 532

Denmark. Speciedaler, 1650. Dav-3540; Hede-50a. Frederik III. Crowned, armored bust right. Reverse: Crowned, royal crest surrounded by eleven provincial crests. Lovely toning, sharply struck on a particularly fine flan, rare and superb for the type. NGC graded AU-55.

Frederick III was king of both Denmark and Norway. The early part of his reign was spent combatting the aggressive Swedish king Charles X. After Frederick successfully withstood Charles' siege of Copenhagen, he became loved by his people, and was granted absolute rule at the expense of the Danish nobility. His coinage was well used, so finding an example of a Speciedaler in this lofty condition is most unusual.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.
Ex Irving Goodman Collection.
