Great Britain. Norman Kings of England. AR Penny, ND (Southwark, struck c. 1136-1145, the Civil War). North-873; S-1278. 1.29 grams. Stephen, 1135-1154 AD. Watford issue type. Moneyer, Tureil. Central circle, within a crowned and draped bust right and holding scepter in right hand, bust extending to edge of flan; +STIEFNE around. Reverse: Central circle, within cross Moline with a fleur-de-lis in each angle: +TUREIL ON SV around. The typical flatness of these often badly struck issues is here limited to the legends. The portrait is remarkably bold and detailed. Handsome, old deep gray toning, tending to browns in the recesses. Virtually As Struck with some luster in evidence. As full a flan as is seen. Tiny edge crack at 8 o'clock obverse, only on the rim. Rare so fine. NGC graded AU-50.
