Great Britain. Kings of All England. AR Penny, ND (York, struck 1062-1066). North-830; S-1183. 1.12 grams. Edward the Confessor, 1042-1066 AD. Facing Bust / Small Cross type. Central quatrefoil (nearly a circle, still with pellet at each apex), within a crowned, draped, and bearded bust facing, the top of crown comprising the upper foil and surmounted by a cross of pellets; +EDPARDE REX around. Reverse: Central circle, small cross pattee within, annulet at side; +SCVLA ON EOFERP around. Sharp, bold strike, choice flan and metal still silvery in color, with pale russet-gray toning. Very lustrous. Interesting provincial style, and variant to type (cf. North, pl. 15, 1). NGC graded MS-62.
Estimated Value $700 - 800.
Bought at Baldwin's, early 1990s, a recent Thames find. Ex Dr Jacob Y. Terner Collection (by private treaty to the Millennia Collection).
