Lot 225

Great Britain. Kings of All England. AR Penny, ND (Southhampton mint, struck c. 991). North-769; S-1147. 1.53 grams. Æthelred II, 978-1016 AD. Benediction Hand type. Central circle, diademed and draped bust right within, cross-headed scepter before; + ÆÐELRÆD REX ANGLORX around. Reverse: Central circle, with Hand of God in Benediction, the last two fingers pointed upward, curved and volute sleeve and small cross within; + IZEGEL M-O HAMP. A crisp strike, with bold details and pleasing portrait, on a choice, full flan of good metal. Artistic, warm, dark-gray Medieval toning. One tiny "peck" mark appears to the left of the thumb, which may serve as identification of this jewel. An important rarity, struck at an elusive mint (only three believed known struck at Southampton), in magnificent condition. Possibly the finest known example of this distinctive type. NGC graded AU-58.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.
Ex W. C. Wells and Ex Dr Jacob Y. Terner Collection (by private treaty to the Millennia Collection). A one-year commemorative issue. Isegel is thought to have been a Jewish moneyer.
