Great Britain. Kings of All England. AR Penny, ND (Bedford mint). North-763; S-1142. 1.37 grams. Edward the Martyr, 975-978 AD. Aethelstan, moneyer. Central circle, diademed and draped bust left within; + EADPEARD REX ANGL" ("N" reversed) around. Reverse: Central circle, small cross pattee within; +AELFSTAN M-O BEDA around. Boldly struck on good metal. Old, even deep gray, with dark, smoky recesses; some lighter iridescent areas, with residual luster. Rare, more so in this special grade. Interesting portrait. NGC graded MS-62.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.
Ex Montagu, Pownall, Bliss, Wheeler, Duke of Argyll, Ridgemont, Conte, and Ex Dr Jacob Y. Terner Collection (by private treaty to the Millennia Collection). Perhaps the finest known.
