Great Britain. Viking Coinage at York. AR Penny, ND (struck c. 897. Possibly a Northumbria mint). North-501; S-988. 1.22 grams. Cnut, 895-902 AD. Central circle, cross pattee within, pellets around; + CVN + NET + TI around. Reverse: Inverted patriarchal cross with C N V T at ends of limbs, REX and pellets in the angles. Pleasing bold legends, on full flan with superb metal. Considerable mint luster evident. Variegated silvery gray toning, boldly reflecting steel blues, greens, magentas, russets and coppery oranges. A sharp gem. Rare in this grade. NGC graded MS-65.
