Lot 197

Great Britain. Kings of East Anglia. AR Penny, ND. North-456; S-954. 1.28 grams. Eadmund, 855-869 AD. Central circle, large alpha or "A" within; + EADMV?D REX around. Reverse: Central circle with cross pattee within, pellet in each angle; + EADIIALD MON (Eadwuld) around (retrograde letters). Pleasing bold legends, on full flan with excellent metal, showing residual luster. Medium to mostly deep gray toning, with hints of russet and gold on obverse. Rare in this quality. NGC graded AU-58.

A handsome example of the coinage of the last king of East Anglia, who was sacrificed by Viking invaders to their god Woden. This inspired the later memorial coinage celebrating Eadmund as a saint.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.
Ex Dr Jacob Y. Terner Collection (by private treaty to the Millennia Collection).

Realized $3,450
