Great Britain. Kings of East Anglia. AR Penny, ND. North-450; S-953. 1.26 grams. Aethelweard, c. 845-855 AD. Central circle, large Anglican "A" within; AEÐELVVEARD REX around large A within. Reverse: Central circle with cross pattee within, pellet in each angle; + EADMVND MN (runic O?) around. Pleasing example with bold legends, full flan, on excellent metal. Medium to mostly deep gray toning. Rare. We note a chip at top. NGC graded EF-40.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,000.
Ex Lord Grantley (911); Lovejoy (1421); SCBI America, no. 232, this coin, and Ex Dr Jacob Y. Terner Collection (by private treaty to the Millennia Collection). Cf Pagan (BNJ, Vol. 52, 1982) pp. 43 and 69, saying that only 41 pieces are known.
