Great Britain. Archbishops of Canterbury. AR Penny, ND (Second Issue, struck c. 793-796 AD). North-229; S-885; BMC --. 1.37 grams. Aethelheard, 793-805 AD. Second issue; struck during the reign of Offa, as Overlord. In three registers: AEDILHEARD ARCGI, pellets at bottom. Reverse: In three registers: at top, M between lunettes; in rest, + OFFA REX, pellets at bottom. Boldly struck with unusually clear legends, and almost perfectly centered, on choice metal. Attractive gold/russet to smokey gray toning, slightly lighter at centers, with residual luster. Extremely Rare. NGC graded AU-58.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.
Said to be Ex Quillee Collection. Ex Dr Jacob Y. Terner Collection (by private treaty to the Millennia Collection).
