Lot 178

Great Britain. Kings of Northumbria. AR Sceat, ND. North-184; S-857. 0.99 grams. Aethelred I, 2nd Reign, 789-796 AD. Small cross at center, ED + LRED around. Reverse: Triangular "shrine" with cross atop; CVD CLS divided. Good strike on lightly granular metal. Attractive and even, light to medium gray toning. Extremely Rare. NGC graded EF-45.

The object depicted is probably the shrine of Saint Cuthbert, patron and protector of the Anglo-Saxon stronghold of Lindisfarne, or Holy Island, near the Scottish border on the North Sea. It was ultimately overrun by the Vikings, who stripped the church. Today a forbidding castle stands at the tip of the island and a modern statue of the saint stands where the original probably existed.
Estimated Value $1,700 - 2,000.
Ex Dr Jacob Y. Terner Collection (by private treaty to the Millennia Collection).

Realized $2,013
