Great Britain. Kings of Northumbria. AR Sceat, ND. North-179; S-849. 1.08 grams. Alchred, 765-774 AD. Small cross at center, AL.CH RED around. Reverse: Fantastic animal right, with long tail and raised foreleg, cross below. Good strike on faintly granular, otherwise fine metal. Handsome medium gray toning. Another "fantastic animal" issue but this coin is a major rarity (North rates this Extremely Rare). A fabulous specimen struck for a little-known, early Anglo-Saxon king. NGC graded MS-63.
