Peru. Republic. 8 Escudos, 1840 -A (Cuzco). Fr-63; KM-148.3. Large Legends type. Tri-segmented shield of arms supported by crossed flags, and crowned above by wreath. Reverse: Liberty as Pallas Athene, stands frontal supporting cap on spear, while one hand rests on shield. Few planchet flaws, lustrous and proof-like. NGC graded MS-62.
The standard issue gold 8 Escudos that were struck after Peru's independence and circulated as legal tender in the United States until the United States Mint struck $20.00 gold pieces in 1850.
