Lot 1171

Peru. 8 Reales, 1811 J.P. (Lima). Eliz-79; WR-12; KM-117.1. 26.31 grams. Ferdinand VII, 1808-1833. Laureate and draped bust of Ferdinand VII right. Reverse: Crowned Bourbon arms, flanked by bannered pillars. Well struck portrait, with virtually full details. Matte to lustrous devices on lustrous to partly reflective fields. Obverse die shows evidence of incipient collapse. Devices toned to gray, with lighter toning in fields. Especially choice for issue. NGC graded MS-62.

The words "plus ultra" are found on the pillars on the reverse of most Spanish large silver coins. This motto is the motto of Spain and means further beyond. The two pillars represent the Pillars of Hercules, and in ancient times this was the westernmost boundary of the known world. The original motto was "nec plus ultra", meaning nothing farther beyond.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.

Realized $2,415
