Lot 1049

Ecuador - Republic. 8 Escudos, 1856-GJ (Quito). Fr-8 var.; KM-34.2. 26.94 grams. Second Bolivar portrait type. Head of Bolivar left. Reverse: Oval shield displaying radiant sun, on astrological course, over high peak and steamship on water, the whole supported by fasces, with crossed flags and wreath behind, and condor above. Superior strike for issue. Some marks and scratches, but mostly limited to obverse and portrait. Very Rare in grade, and one of the finest known!

A one year type, and the last of the onza gold series coins for the country. Well struck examples are very rare, thus this is one of the most difficult South American onzas to find in a desirable strike and grade. NGC graded MS-62.

One of the great naturalist experiences in the world is to travel the "Avenue of the Volcanoes" in Ecuador. This is a valley almost 200 miles long that contains some of the most awesome and impressive volcanoes in the world. Despite the fact that this area is so close to the Equator, many are snow covered. Probably the most famous is Cotopaxl, believed to be the highest active volcano in the world at close to 16,000 feet.
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.

Realized $24,150
