Ecuador - Republic. 8 Escudos, 1842-MV-S (Quito). Fr-3; KM-23.2. 26.83 grams. Second Liberty type. Draped bust of Liberty left, with brooch and earring. Reverse: Radiant sun on astrological course, above three high peaks, two with bird emblems; row of stars above. Excellent, detailed strike for series. Exceptionally lustrous, with fine old red toning along the peripheries. Very clean and problem free. One of the finest known. NGC graded MS-62.

Ecuador was part of the Incan Empire. In fact, Atahualpa, son of an Incan Emperor, ruled the northern half of the Empire in Quito. He precipitated a Civil War, which he won, against his brother Huascar in Cuzco. This war devestated the Empire, and facilitated the conquest of the area by the Spanish conquistador, Pizzaro, soon afterward.
