Lot 1043

Costa Rica -Central American Republic. 8 Reales, 1831-CR-F (San Jose). WR-1; Eliz-2; KM-22. 27.01 grams. Radiant sun face setting over row of volcanoes. Reverse: Tree on foliate ground, value on either side. Reverse die a little off-center, creating some unevenness in the legends, but centers fully and superbly detailed. Boldly lustrous, with quite clean, reflective fields. Medium toning reflecting steely golds, blues, and greens, with occasional vivid coloring.

A rare coin in this grade, with this being by far the finest and only known uncirculated specimen. NGC graded MS-63 Prooflike.

This type with the Ceiba tree on one side, and sun over the volcanoes on the other, was produced in both Guatemala and Costa Rica. The Guatemala coins are relatively common, the Costa Rican ones far rarer.
Estimated Value $12,500 - 15,000.

Realized $21,275
