Lot 1398

Lot of Choice Old Netsuke and Small Carvings. Japan, c. 19th - early 20th century. Items in ivory, and some perhaps marine ivory or bone. A varied and attractive group, all quality examples of their craft. Particularly fine are studies of a one-eyed fox-like being clothed against the weather in large leaves; an old man or woman, a sack thrown over his back, out of which the head of a demon pops; and a monkey sneaking onto a fruit-laden cart. Other animals include: a powerfully carved Foo Dog, or similar; and an exhausted Bactrian camel, its head plopped on the ground. Inspection recommended. One piece with small repair, but overall ivories handsomely preserved for their age and use. Average length: 1-3/4" to 2". Lot of 9 items.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.

Realized $863
