Lot 1391

Early 19th Century Austrian Silver Merman Centerpiece or Goblet. A most interesting work in silver depicting a merman with fish scale legs and webbed feet holding aloft a lidded goblet made from an ostrich egg overlaid in silver. The interior of the goblet also in silver and with a hallmarked base (3 marks; one indistinct multi-part, a 7 pointed star or flower and 13 in a square) decorated in floral motifs with sea monsters in oval panels, the egg with a repeating geometric/floral pattern. The lid with a finely carved ostrich head at top. Some slight cracks to the egg with a lightly carved ladder design in one area and a small hole in the shell well hidden under a silver support, otherwise very good age appropriate condition and an undoubtedly rare subject and medium.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,500.

Realized $4,025
