[Audubon, John Woodhouse (1812-1862)] "Spermophilus Mexicanus Licht. Mexican Marmot - Squirrel," Plate 124. Lithograph printed and hand-colored by J.T. Bowen, Philadelphia, 1847. From the third volume of The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, 18½ x 24½" (visible). The marmot is shown in left profile, sitting up on his hind legs. Some toning, primarily along the lower border; a small blue "E.D.S. Library/Peabody" stamp is located across the lower edge of the image and the upper edge of the lower border. Matted and framed to 25½" x 31½".
With the help of his son, John Woodhouse Audubon, John James Audubon began to document and paint the mammals of North America in 1839. When John James' health began to fail in 1846, John Woodhouse took over all of the painting. The Reverend John Bachman researched and described each species and J.T. Bowen was enlisted to create lithographs, which were then hand-painted. Three volumes of Quadrupeds were completed and published in 1845, 1846, and 1848. It would be John James Audubon's last project.
