[Audubon, John Woodhouse (1812-1862). "Putorius Agilis, Aud & Bach. / Little Nimble Weasel," Plate 140. Lithograph printed and hand-colored by J.T. Bowen, Philadelphia, 1848. From the third volume of The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, imperial folio (22" x 27"). A charming portrait of two weasels in their winter coats observing a cicada on the branch of a dead tree. Matted to 24" x 32¼". Fine.
With the help of his son, John Woodhouse Audubon, John James Audubon began to document and paint the mammals of North America in 1839. When John James' health began to fail in 1846, John Woodhouse took over all of the painting. The Reverend John Bachman researched and described each species and J.T. Bowen was inlisted to create lithographs, which were then hand-painted. Three volumes of Quadrupeds were completed and published in 1845, 1846, and 1848. It would be John James Audubon's last project.
