Evgraf Semyonovich Sorokin (1821-1892), Russian artist and teacher, specializing in historical, religious and genre paintings was born in 1821 in Kostroma county in Russia. He began the study of painting with an unknown religious painter from city of Jaroslavl. Having shown promise, a local Priest gave to him a commission to paint within the local church. On the advice of his benefactor and in honor of Russian Emperior Nicolas I who visited city of Jaroslavl at this time he created a painting with the lengthy title (aproximate translation), "Peter The Great During a Church Ceremony, Observing the Painter A. Matveev as He Painted His Portrait and Became Impressed With His Talent". This painting was shown to the Emperor and he ordered that Sorokin be accepted to the Academy of Fine Arts in 1841. He studied at the Academy under the supervision of professor A. Markov. In 1845 he was awarded the Large Silver Medal, then four years later he received a Gold Medal for his 1849 painting, " Ian Usmovets Stopping an Angry Bull". For his further good work he received a government grant and was sent to Europe to study, traveling through Germany, Belgium, France, Spain and also Syria and Egypt. For his painting "Good News", he achieived the title of Academician. During this period Sorokin created six religious icons and wall paintings for the Orthodox Church in Paris. In 1859 he returned to Russia and began work at the Moscow College of Painting and Sculpture as an instructor and remained in this position until his death in 1892, having received in 1878 the title of professor for his achievements in painting at the Moscow Church of Jesus.
