Sanborn Insurance Maps of Watertown, New York, 1909. By the Sanborn Map Co., 11 Broadway, New York, 1909, with renewed 1937 copyright and with corrections up to 1955 pasted to the front end page; a "New Index" from 1931 is pasted over the original index. Bound, hard-cover volume of 75 maps, 25" x 21"; leather tabs for title page and for maps, which are large street plans at a scale of 1000 feet to one inch; album pages are heavy card stock, with lithographed map parts laid to the pages. The title page is followed by an index with the names of churches, schools, businesses, etc., and a master index (updated to 1953) showing the entirety of the mapped area and the sheet numbers for each large-scale map, and information such as building composition, location and number of fire hydrants, location of sprinklers, windows, pipes, etc. The maps include outlines of each building and outbuilding, street names, street and sidewalk widths, property boundaries, natural features such as rivers and canals, railroad corridors, and other information. The names of most public buildings, churches and companies are noted. Album covers are worn and stained, spine is damaged and broken at the front joint, but maps are intact, with light toning. The maps should be examined in person to be appreciated.

Sanborn maps were originally created for assessing fire insurance liability in urban areas in the United States. Between 1867 and 1970, some 12,000 U.S. towns and cities were mapped. They are wonderful research tools and are not often found in private hands.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 6,000.
