[California] Military Governors - Robert F. Stockton and Richard B. Mason. Robert F. Stockton (1795-1866) Naval commodore who captured California during the Mexican War, military governor of California (1846-47). ALS ("R.F. Stockton") as Lt. Commander, 1p, 10" x 8", Washington, 1852 Mar. 12, mentioning a "letter to Mr. Webster on the lottery question" and a copy of the "Republican" with a ballad about Stockton at Monterey: "…it strikes me that the literary merits of that effusion entitle its author to a high rank among the poets of America…". Old backing and file holes, else fine. Richard B. Mason (1797-1850) Career army officer and military governor of California (1847-49); he reported to President Polk when gold was found at Sutter's Mill. ALS, 2pp plus integral address lead, Washington, 1832 July 4. To Navy agent Brodhead, regarding timber, adding, "Bank bill goes to the President it is believed this day and he is determined on its final fate…the friends of the Bank has committed suicide to that Institution by pressing the rechartering this Congress…". More on the Bank. Very good; uneven toning.
