[California] Governors - Group of 16, Covering 1849-1999. A wonderful collection of letters and documents signed by 16 of California’s 38 governors, eleven of them before 1900. This historic group includes California's first two elected governors, Peter Burnett (signature only) and John McDougall (signature and place); the remainder are full letters or documents, except Jerry Brown (PS), most signed as governor. Eleven of the men governed between 1849 and 1899; the other five were 20th century governors. The governors are: Peter Burnett, John A. McDougall, J. Neeley Johnson, John B. Weller, John G. Downey (Civil War governor), Frederick F. Low (Civil War governor), Newton Booth, William Irwin, George Stoneman (also a Union cavalry general), H.H. Markham, James H. Budd, Hiram W.
