Benjamin, Judah P (1811-1884) British born (St. Croix) and raised in South Carolina. U.S. senator from Louisiana, then C.S.A. cabinet officer, serving as Attorney General, Secretary of War, and Secretary of State; he was the first Jewish Cabinet member in a North American government. He fled to England at the end of the war and successfully practiced law there, writing a classic treatise on the sale of personal property.

ALS ("J.P. Benjamin") as the Confederate Secretary of War, 1 p., on pale blue, lined "Confederate States of America / War Department" letterhead, 10" x 7¾", Richmond, 1862 Jan. 24. To Thomas O. Moore, Governor of Louisiana, calling his attention to a letter (not present) "of the Act'g Commissioner of Indian Affairs…with the accompanying Statement, &c. and to request your co-operation in carrying out the intention of the Congress of the Confederate States, as therein set forth…." One small purple pencil mark at top; verso has small tape repairs to folds, else fine.
