[Edward S. Curtis] Jicarilla Matron. Portfolio Plate No. 23 from The North American Indian (1907-1930), vol. 1. 16½" x 12¼". "From Copyright Photograph 1904 by E.S. Custis, Photogravure by John Andrew & Son." Matted and framed to an overall size of 23½" x 19"; some damp staining at lower edge of matte, not affecting the plate. Custis' life work, The North American Indian, is contained in 20 volumes of text, with infomation on and photographs of some 80 western Native American tribes. Theodore Roosevelt wrote the foreword. The New York Herald called The North American Indian "the most gigantic undertaking in the making of books since the King James edition of the Bible".
