Lot 4336

Great Britain. Crown, 1644. S.3058 (incorrect number on slab); Dav-3765. Charles I, 1625-43. Exeter mint. Mint mark, rose. Date to the left of mint mark. King on horseback left. Reverse: Oval arms. Date struck slightly weak. Nicely toned with underlying luster. NGC graded AU-55.

There were two major issues of great importance to the average Englishman of the time. Freedom from absolutist tyranny and freedom from Catholic plots. Charles was on the wrong side on both of these issues. A true believer in the divine right of kings, he abolished Parliament in 1629. In 1625 he married Henrietta Maria, a Catholic. These two acts alienated the people against him and ultimately led to his hanging in 1649.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.
The Dr. Robert Hesselgesser Collection.

Realized $2,013
