Lot 4214

Transylvania. Ducat, 1629. Fr-366; KM-207. Gabriel Bethlen, 1613-1629. Bust right. Reverse: Madonna and child standing behind shield. Lightly cleaned. Extremely Fine.

Transylvania, located in western Romania, was a buffer state between the Catholic Habsburgs and the Moslem Ottomans. The population was religiously mixed between Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Protestant. In 1568 the Edict of Turda was passed granting four religious expressions (Catholic, Lutheran, Calvinist, and Unitarian), and one religious toleration (Orthodox). This is considered the first legal guarantee of reigious freedom in Christian Europe (as long as you weren't Jewish).
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,500.

Realized $2,520
