Lot 4088

Mexico. 4 Escudos, 1829-Go MJ. Fr-83; KM-381.4. Republic. Hand with Liberty Cap over book. Reverse: Eagle facing right. Lightly cleaned with a few light obverse scratches. Fine to Very Fine.

This coin was minted at the Guanajuato mint. Guanajuato means in the ancient Tarascan language, "City of Frogs". After Guanajuato was founded in 1554, the Spanish discovered important silver deposits nearby. Machinery to establish a mint was brought in, because it was simpler to bring in the machines than to transport the ore. Later gold coins were minted as well, but in smaller quantities than the silver pieces.
Estimated Value $325 - 375.

Realized $460
