Roman Imperatorial Period. Julius Caesar, d. 44 BC. AR Denarius, Rome mint, March - April 44 BC. Laureate head right; CAESAR IMPER. Reverse: Venus stands left, holding Victory and spear, arm resting on shield, which is atop globe; M. METTIVS; C in left field. Craw. 480/17; BMCRR 4137; cf. especially Sear II 1419 (illustration clearly shows a "C" engraved over another, earlier, control mark); Sear Imperatorial, 101; RSC 35. Well centered on rather tight flan. Attractive old toning with touches of blue iridescence. Obverse die worn, with some smoothing in fields; reverse struck from fresh die, and is sharp, with excellent metal. About Very Fine.
