Roman Imperatorial Period. Julius Caesar, d. 44 BC. AR Denarius, Rome mint, Feb. - Mar. 44 BC. Laureate and veiled head right; CAESAR DICT. IN PERPETVO. Reverse: Venus stands left, holding Victory and spear, arm resting on shield, which is atop globe; C. MARIDIANVS. Craw. 480/15; BMCRR 4186; RSC 10. Good centering on generous flan, but uneven strike. Pleasing toning, showing some colorful iridescence. An excellent portraitr type. A most historical piece -- struck shortly before Caesar's death. Very Fine.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,250.
Among the rarer of Caesar's portraits. Crawford records only 5 obverse dies for this issue.
