1862, $100 United States Note FACE PROOF and BACK PROOF. . Fr-165. . KL-784. A Specimen Pair! Described and graded by PMG as follows: Fr. 165 Chittenden/Spinner $100.00 1862 Legal Tender Face Proof, Choice Uncirculated 63, Punch Cancelled. Together with: Hessler 1121 India Paper on Card $100.00 1862 Legal Tender Back Design Proof, Choice Uncirculated Exceptional Paper Quality. Extremely Rare and the first of such we can remember handling.

The $100 denomination of this series has a large American eagle as its front motif. This was the first note to feature the American eagle. The back uses the Second Obligation wording. Legal Tender notes, or as they are equally described, United States Notes, were spun out of the monetary crisis that developed at the start of the War of the Rebellion. (According to the Dept. of War, the official records refer to the American Civil War as "The War of the Rebellion".) This specimen has punch cancels through the two printed signatures of Chittenden and Spinner, as mentioned, and is on fresh India paper card stock. Lot of 2 notes.
