Ruth, George Herman "Babe" (1895-1948) One of the greatest baseball players in the history of the sport; he hit 60 home runs in 1927 in only 156 games and held the lifetime record of 714 until Henry Aaron broke it in 1974. First day cover of the "Centennial of Baseball 1939-1939" stamp, which was issued in Cooperstown, New York, in conjunction with the opening of the Baseball Hall of Fame, of which Ruth was one of the first inductees, signed and inscribed "From Babe Ruth For Gumby's Stamp Collection" in blue ink in the address section. The person to whom Ruth inscribed the cover was Lou Chapman, a longtime baseball writer for the Milwaukee Sentinelwho was covering the opening of the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was nicknamed "Scoop" and "Gumby" for his abilities to track down a story. The first such Babe Rugh inscribed cover we have seen.
