Sectional Ivory Carving of a Young Woman. Japan, c. 1880's-1930's. The sculpture of the comely young woman made up of nearly dozen pieces of ivory fitted together. Perhaps an immortal, she carries a basket of peaches (symbol of long life), and offers one up to the viewer. Finely carved and patterned, polychrome has been added to enhance the details. Underneath base, artisan's signature in red. Half of basket handle missing, and could be easily restored. Overall, piece very well preserved. Height: 7-3/4".
