Lot 806

Bouraine, Marcel (1886-1948). Art Deco period (c. 1925) bronze of a young woman balancing on one foot, on stepped base of fine Belgian black marble, with tan veining. The top step inscribed: "Bouraine." The scuplture's gilt(?) finish rubbed away in areas. Sculpture needs to be re-attached to base, which is also in need of some modest restoration. Overall height: 11-3/4". Work a good French mix of playfulness and sensuality.

Marcel-Andre Bouraine was born in Pontoise, France, and studied under J. Falguiere (1881 - 1900), who had reintroduced a harder realism to nineteenth-century French sculpture. After WWI, Bouraine began to exhibit at the Salon des Tuileries. The following year he was at the Salon d'Autommne. He specialised in small-scale sculptures of playful nude women, often for several French firms, including Susse Freer, La Verrier, and Arthur Goldscheider. Some later commissions, again mostly female nudes, were executed in colored, translucent pate de verre.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,300.
