Attractive Ivory Carving of Ho Toi. China, c. 1900-1930. Ho Toi stands with head tilted to one side, hands raised either in surprise or blessing, and a beaming smile lighting his face. The carving fine and craftsmanly -- now with a few light age cracks, and attractive warm age patina on back. A bat (a good luck emblem) rests on him ample tummy. Base missing, with losses to two fingers. Height: 7-7/8". Attractive, tactile work.

Ho-Toi is "The Laughing Buddha." He is also known as Satai, and other names also, and he is Buddha from a later incarnation. He is amusingly playful, and teaches the wisdom and healing power of joy.
Estimated Value $250 - 450.
