Chemiakin, Mikhail (Russian, b. 1943). Carnaval I. Lithographic print with 6 figures -- stylized and abstracted figures derived from 18th century Italian circuses and carnivals - generally in softly modulated earth colors, with spare brighter accents. Signed lower right; edition no. 242 / 275; sheet size: 13-1/2" square.

Mikhail Chemiakin was born in Moscow in 1943, grew up in occupied East Germany, and then returned to Russia in 1957. He was expelled from art school for "failing to conform to Socialist Realist norms." He subsequently worked as a laborer at various jobs. In 1971 Chemiakin was forced out of the USSR by the Soviet authorities where he first settled in France, then moved to New York City in 1981. There his activities expanded to include music, theater production, and most of all, publishing.
Estimated Value $500 - 750.
